The transition from crib to bed can be stressful for both you and your toddler. Try to ease that transition by following these great tips.
1. Use the same bedding that was in your child's crib when possible. Although the sheets will not fit, try using the same blankets, comforters, and pillows. Some parents even use the crib bumpers for a few days until their child becomes adjusted to his or her new bed.
Bed Safety Rails For Toddlers
2. Look for a bed in which safety bed rails can be attached. You can purchase toddler bed rails for almost all types of toddler beds, and there are a wide variety of safety bed rails available for all sized adult beds. Using bed rails will not only keep your toddler safe, but they will also help with the transition from a crib since they will give him or her a sense of being partially enclosed. Be sure to follow the safety instructions carefully when installing the safety bed rails.
3. Choose a toddler bed that is close to the ground. That way your child can get in and out of bed safely without danger of being injured.
4. Don't introduce any other major changes in your toddler's routine at the same time that you are transitioning him or her out of the crib. This includes the birth of new siblings. Try to transition your child several months before the birth of your new baby to avoid feelings of displacement and insecurity.
5. Feel free to stay with your child for the first 5-15 minutes while they are trying to fall asleep in their new bed. As goes with good sleep habits in general, don't fall into the trap of allowing your child to get out of bed just because they are in transition to a new bed. If he or she is feeling insecure for the first few nights, try sitting in a chair near the bed for the first few minutes after reading him or her a story.
6. If you are planning on traveling close to the time of the transition, consider buying portable bed rails for your toddler to maintain consistency in your approach. You can also purchase toddler travel beds or infant travel beds if a full size bed will not be available.
7. Make sure you position the bed in a manner that will prevent your little one from getting trapped between the bed and the wall or any other furniture (tables, big chairs, extra beds, etc.). If you do decide to put the bed against the wall, consider using safety bed rails on both sides of the bed anyway.
8. Some parents find it easier to transition their child into a bed if they set up the bed a few weeks or months before the transition and encourage their child to play in or near the bed during the day. That way they get used to the bed and are more receptive to sleeping in it.
9. Consider buying themed toddler beds or themed sheets. Toddlers tend to be much more willing to sleep in a bed with their favorite character. However do note that depending on your child's personality and sleep habits, some parents actually find this to be a distraction when putting their child to sleep. If this is the case consider purchasing a more simple design.
10. Initially consider purchasing crib rails if your crib is convertible. Letting your little one sleep in a crib for a few more weeks or months may make the transition easier once you decide to move him or her to a bed.
